K9 Unit Book Editor and Journalist — “Officer Marcel”

As a K9 Unit book editor and editor-in-chief of Katy Christian Magazine, it was a special honor to “interview” a remarkable four-legged hero who was flown in all the way from France to train and work in law enforcement. In 2014, “Officer Marcel” — a French moniker — was busily serving school campuses with his handler, Sargeant Justin Moyer of the Katy ISD Police Department.

K9 Unit Book Editor and Journalist Meets K9 Officer Marcel

Officer Marcel was a very special part of the K9 unit of the Katy ISD Police Department and had served six years with Sergeant Moyer when we featured the daring duo in 2014. The talented dog was nearly nine years old but still spry and extremely effective on the job.

To this special canine, balls and toys were ample rewards for successfully completing his tasks and sniffing out trouble. When Police dogs process their work as a fun challenge, the game never gets old. Officer Marcel also visited schools and met students and staff, and was especially beloved by young elementary children at campuses such as Hayes Elementary and Stephens Elementary.

A Hero’s Send-Off

Katy ISD announced the passing of Officer Marcel, now retired, in July of 2019. Channel 13 Eye Witness News reported this sad “hero down” news with an image of the K9 in a uniform.

I admit to feeling emotional every time I think of Officer Marcel and appreciate that Katy Christian Magazine and photographer Nikki Guest captured a snippet of his life and service. He’ll always be remembered as a hero dog, companion, public servant, and friend to the students, faculty, administration, and fellow officers at the school district.
